During the feud with Gail, the evil Taryn constantly antagonized Gail by making indirect advances towards Gail's husband, Robert Irvine, and after successfully defending her title against Gail in a cage match, the trio attacked Gail, with the attack including Taryn breaking Gail's ring finger. Brooke was instilled into the feud when she confronted Taryn for bullying Kong. Weeks after losing the title, Taryn was assaulted by Gail and Velvet Sky , who injured her in the process. Rebel appeared acting like she would help Velvet, only to attack her from behind, turning Rebel into a villainess.

After the attack, the evil Rebel became the newest member of The Dollhouse, and on the following week, the group began feuding with the reunited Beautiful People.

We all have different stories to tell, some happy, some sad, some tragic. Women today have many more opportunities and different expectations, much of it because of the strides women made during the 50's and 60's.

Having a man in your life is now a choice and not a necessity. Women had a very hard time to support themselves, with limited incomes. Thank heavens times have changed.

See a Problem?

We all liked the book, and perhaps it would be a revelation to younger women. I moved to Manhattan Could so relate to Darby. I moved to Manhattan from a small town in Western New York in , after my parents died, when I was a very naive My guardian made me carry a long hat pin with me if just walked a few feet from our apartment building.

That was to attack any strange man who approached me. She also warned me not to smile at or speak to anyone on the street or I could be "sold into white slavery". At the time I thought that meant someone would take me to the South to pick cotton! I was completely unaware of the seamy side of the city and could not understand why I had so many restrictions. Reading the book, I was often concerned for Darby's safety. In the narrative voice of present day journalist, Rose Lewin, I felt for her situation as she waited expectantly for her lover of three years to come home from work, halfway expecting a marriage proposal.

But instead, he told her he was going back to his ex-wife because of problems with his teenage daughter. Then, almost without a second thought, he tells her a few days later that she has to move out. His family needs to move in.

I was stunned by her situation, since he had persuaded her to give up her apartment in the West Village. But during her stay at the Barbizon condo, she had met an elderly woman on the fourth floor, the place where the long-term residents were allowed to stay after the building turned into condominiums. She was told the woman was named Miss McLaughlin. She always wore a hat and heavy veil. Flashback to , and a young woman named Darby McLaughlin found herself in an untenable situation.

Esme opened up possibilities for Darby, a part of New York she had never seen, a place with jazz clubs and interesting people. Darby had grown up in Ohio, and when faced with going back there, she hoped to find another way to stay in New York.

She is in a situation, too, as she has to go to the hospital for tests and needs someone to watch the dog, Bird. She tells Rose just enough to pique her curiosity further. Perfect, right? Can the two of them find out the mysterious story that someone has hinted at, involving a fall from one of the higher floors, a death, a badly scarred face?

Who is Sam, the man with a mysterious book of spices, and an incredible ability to mix them?

What happened on that roof on Halloween night? Why has Darby become a recluse?
